Banteay Samrè refers to an ethnic group of mountain people, who inhabited the region at the base of Phnom Kulen and were probably related to Khmers. It is believed that some people living in the preah Dak village are also the descendents of Samre. Banteay Samre temple dated from the same period of the construction of Angkor Wat and was built by Suryavarman II in 1113-1150, dedicating to Vishnu-God.
